● What is SSP?

Abbreviation of Special Study Permit

In the Philippines, the Special Study Permit (SSP) is a type of permit legally issued by the Bureau of Immigration for students studying English. This permit is not applied for by individual students but rather by educational institutions authorized to apply for SSPs on behalf of their enrolled students. Therefore, when choosing a language school for your English studies in the Philippines, it is important to select a school that is officially registered and authorized to issue SSPs. In other words, institutions that issue SSPs are legitimate educational institutions, and studying at a school that does not issue SSPs may lead to issues with your stay or upon departure from the country.

Any institution not showing a SSP or TESDA must be 99% illegal.

The Philippine Bureau of Immigration regularly or randomly conducts inspections on foreign students, requiring them to present their SSP (Special Study Permit) and proof that their language school is accredited by TESDA. If these are not in order, students can face serious consequences—as seen in a recent news report where 113 students on a language study trip were detained in the Philippines due to unpaid SSP fees. In such cases, students may be detained in immigration facilities and forcibly deported. Once deported, they are permanently banned from re-entering the Philippines, causing severe and lasting damage to the students involved. Worse still, many are held in detention for months without understanding what is happening. This is why it’s crucial to avoid illegal language schools that are not authorized with SSP and TESDA accreditation. While many schools claim to be authorized by SSP and TESDA, some are fraudulent—this can be likened to being robbed in broad daylight.
